NTF

Nostalgia Top Fuel refers to NHRA NTF rules.

OTF

Outlaw Top Fuel is based on Nostalgia Top Fuel with changes made to increase participation and spectator appeal.  The most noteable change is the inclusion of both front and rear engine chassis designs.

Outlaw Top Fuel

Designation:

OTF preceded by number

Class is for front engine and rear engine nitro burning dragsters.  250 inch maximum wheelbase.

Each car is allowed one oil down at each race.  After that oil down nullifies run.  Break rule is in effect.

Requirements and Specifications

ENGINE

ENGINE

Any internal combustion , reciprocating piston, OEM style engine permitted.  500 cubic inch maximum.  Minimum weight is 1800 lbs. (with driver after run). Maximum bore center spacing is 4.90 inches.  Major engine components must be aluminum, steel, magnesium, or titanium.

LOWER CONTAINMENT

Engine must be equipped with a SFI Spec 7.1 lower engine ballistic/restraint device.  Oil pan must be aluminum or steel.  In addition, an engine oil retention pan is mandatory.  FED: Pan must extend from frame rail to frame rail  and from rear motor plate to minimum of 1 inch forward of lower pulley front face.  RED: Pan must extend from frame rail to frame rail  and from 1 inch forward of lower pulley front face to the rear face of the bell housing.  Must have minimum of 4 inch high sides, 2 inch high front and rear, 0.040 minimum thickness.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

Exhaust must be directed away from driver.  Zoomies only.

FUEL

Nitromethane and Methanol only.  70 percent nitromethane required.  Fuel lube allowed.

FUEL SYSTEM

Single fuel pump mandatory.  Fuel pump restricted to a total fuel  delivery  of 21.0 gpm at 4,000 rpm pump speed measured through a 0.300 orifice.  Pump must be driven at ½ crankshaft speed .

Fuel shutoff must be operable from the driver’s seat.

No pressurized fuel tanks. Fuel tanks must be mounted above the lower frame rail. Fuel tank and fuel lines must be within the confines of the frame and be protected from coming in contact with the track surface.  Fuel tank must have a positive locking screw on cap.  Fuel lines must be isolated from driver’s compartment. Fuel gauge lines in the driver’s compartment must be steel braided with steel  fittings.

OIL LINES

SUPERCHARGER

For Roots type supercharger: Supercharger restraint system meeting SFI Spec 14.3 mandatory.  Aluminum studs required.  Manifold burst panel meeting SFI Spec 23.1 mandatory.  Supercharger belt guard mandatory.  Fuel and oil lines must be shielded wherever they pass the supercharger drive belt.

Centrifugal and Screw superchargers will be allowed on an experimental basis as approved.  May require use of boost limiting pop off valve.   Must be approved at prior event with testing runs and data.  Proper restraint system and burst panels will be required.

Turbochargers prohibited. Intercooler/aftercooler prohibited.

THROTTLE

Throttle control must be manually operated by drivers foot.   Electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics or any other device may in no way affect throttle operation.  Throttle must incorporate a positive action return system.

VALVE COVERS

Valve covers must be aluminum, steel, magnesium, or titanium.  Valve covers must use all attachment bolts.

VENT TUBE BREATHERS

Vent tubes must be double clamped at each connection.  Minimum vent tube diameter is 1.25”.  Minimum catch can capacity is 4 gallons.  Catch can must have adequate internal baffling to prevent oil from being deposited on racing surface.  Each car is allowed one oil down at each race without penalty.  Subsequent violations result in nullification of run.

DRIVETRAIN

CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL, FLYWHEEL SHIELD

Flywheel and clutch meeting SFI Spec 1.3 or 1.4 and flywheel shield meeting SFI Spec 6.2 is required.  Clutch management system is prohibited.  Release of clutch must be the result of a manual operation by the driver’s foot.  Anti-blowback device on bellhousing is mandatory.

DRIVELINE COVER

On FED, driveline must be covered in 0.0625 steel  or 0.125 aluminum 360 degree full cover.  Couplers mandatory.

REAR END

Aftermarket full floating assembly mandatory.

TRANSMISSION

Reverser mandatory.  Any number of forward gears allowed.

Torque Converter

Allowed with use of SFI 6.1,6.2,6.3 flywheel shield.  SFI 29.1 flywheel, or solid steel converter driveplate, and SFI 4.1  shield.  Converter equipped front engine cars must have sheet metal completely shielding driver from transmission.

TRANSMISSION SHIELD

A one piece ballistic shield covering all units and meeting SFI Spec 4.1 is mandatory.

BRAKES AND SUSPENSION

BRAKES

Four piston hydraulic rear wheel brakes minimum.  Application and release of brakes must be a function of the driver.  Hand brake handle must be located inside body and driver compartment.  Steel brake lines mandatory.  All flexible connection lines must be steel braided with fire covering.  Brake lines must be shielded where they pass engine and supercharger drive.

STEERING

Conventional rod ends must be minimum of 3/8 shank and fastener and must be installed with suitable washers to prevent bearing pullout.  Removable steering wheel, if used, must meet SFI Spec 42.1.  A device must be used to prevent a long steering shaft from injuring driver in case of frontal impact.

FRAME

BALLAST

Must be secured with minimum of two 3/8 inch Grade 8 fasteners per 50 pounds.

DEFLECTOR PLATE/ HELMET SHROUD

Rear engine cars must have a deflector plate installed between roll cage and engine.  The deflector plate must be 1/8 6061 T6 aluminum or 1/16 steel or titanium and must extend 1 inch above top blower pulley and 1 inch below bottom pulley.  Deflector plate must be a minimum of 10 inches wide from the shoulder hoop up to the highest point and at least 12 inches wide below the shoulder hoop.  On any enclosed engine/driver configuration, a full bulkhead must be installed to completely seal driver from engine.  Minimum attachment for any plate is four 5/16 grade 8 bolts.

All REDs must have a rear roll cage shroud. A one, two, or three piece shroud is acceptable.  The shroud must be constructed of minimum 0.075 titanium or 0.090 steel shaped to conform to the roll cage.

GROUND CLEARANCE

Minimum of 3 inches from front of car to 12 inches behind front wheels.  2 inches for remainder of car.

PARACHUTE

Dual parachutes mandatory.  Chutes must be sized for 250 mph dragsters.  Each chute must have its own mounting point with sleeved ½ inch bolts in double shear, Grade 8 with locknuts or welded nuts. Fire resistant protective covers must be on all parachute packs and unpacked shroud lines.  Two separate release cables mandatory.

ROLL CAGE

Chassis must have manufacturer’s name, serial number, and date of manufacture.  Front engine cars must meet SFI Spec 2.2C or 2.4C (6.0 and slower).  Rear engine cars must meet SFI Spec 2.1A, 2.3N, or 2.5C (6.0 and slower).  Plating of chassis prohibited, painting permitted.  Roll cage padding meeting SFI Spec 45.1 mandatory where driver’s helmet may come in contact with roll cage.  Side head supports required that meet SFI Spec 45.1.

SUSPENSION

Rigid rear suspension mandatory.  Front suspension optional.

WHEELBASE

Maximum : 250 inches on long side.  Maximum wheelbase variation from left to right is 2 inches.

TIRES AND WHEELS

TIRES

Race only spec tires on front and rear mandatory.

WHEELS

Rear wheels must be either beadlock design or use of a liner mandatory on non beadlock wheels.

INTERIOR

SHEET METAL

All sheet metal within the driver’s compartment must be steel or aluminum.  Magnesium prohibited.

UPHOLSTERY

Minimum one layer, flame retardant material mandatory as seat upholstery.

BODY

AIRFOILS

Combined area of all wings behind front axle is 900 square inches.  Rear wing cannot extend more than 50 inches behind rear axle centerline.  Side mounted canard type units permitted.   Front wing cannot extend past maximum overhang of 30 inches.

BODY

Driver compartment, frame structure, roll bars, and body should be designed to prevent driver’s body or limbs from contacting track surface.  On front engine cars motor plate, cowl, sheet metal, and floor must completely seal driver from engine.  On rear engine cars floorboard must isolate fuel lines from driver’s compartment and seat, floor, sheet metal, body, and front firewall should be designed to seal driver’s compartment.

MOTORPLATE

Must be constructed of 0.250 inch aluminum or steel.

ELECTRICAL

IGNITION

Limited to single magneto or distributor with one coil.  One spark plug per cylinder.  Ignition shutoff required within driver’s reach.

SUPPORT GROUP

DATA RECORDERS

Allowed but only for the purposes of gathering data.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM

Fire extinguisher system meeting SFI Spec 17.1 mandatory.  Minimum 20 lb. on front engine cars.  Minimum 10 lb. on rear engine cars.

Minimum 6 point 3 inch driver restraint system meeting SFI Spec 16.1 mandatory.  All belts and mounting points must be covered with fire resistant covering.

HELMET

Full face helmet meeting Snell 2000, 2005 or 2010 with face shield mandatory.

HEAD AND NECK RESTRAINT

Head and Neck restraint device meeting SFI Spec 38.1 mandatory.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

Driver’s suit meeting SFI Spec 3.2A/20, gloves 3.2A/20, boots 3.2A/20, and head sock 3.3 mandatory.

 

AA/FD

These rules are intended to be a guideline for participation in the AA/FD exhibition class at Fuel and Gas Series events beginning in 2014.  This class is intended for Classic styled front and rear engine dragsters that are as period correct as possible ( pre 1971) while still meeting modern safety standards.  The cars can be new creations or replicas or rebuilds of past cars.

The class will be presented in Chicago style format only with 2 or 3 runs depending on the event.  Payout will be performance based but all runs 6.99 @ 200 mph ( 4.49@160 in 1/8) and quicker will pay the same.

AA FUEL DRAGSTER

Designation:

AA/FD preceded by number

Class is for front engine supercharged nitro burning dragsters.  225 inch maximum wheelbase unless car is replica of longer car.

 

Requirements and Specifications

ENGINE

ENGINE

Any internal combustion , OEM type engine permitted.   Maximum bore center spacing is 4.90 inches.  No billet blocks or heads allowed.  Cast iron and aluminum allowed.

LOWER CONTAINMENT
